Two premium illuminated sign styles — same impact, different glow. Here's how to choose the right one for your project.
When clients ask about illuminated channel letters, the most common question is: what's the difference between backlit and halo-lit? Both look stunning, both use LED lighting — but they work differently, mount differently, and suit different environments.
This guide breaks it down clearly so you can make the right call for your storefront, lobby, or brand installation.
The letter body is fabricated from metal (stainless steel or aluminum). The back face is an acrylic panel — the LED strip shines through it, creating an illuminated outline around the letter face.
Because the rear acrylic panel is exposed, the letter sits flush against the wall. The light shines forward through the acrylic, making the letter outline glow.
The letter is fully enclosed — no exposed acrylic on the rear. The acrylic diffuser is hidden inside. The LED strip projects light backward onto the wall surface, creating a soft glowing halo effect behind each letter.
Since the light needs space to spread on the wall, the letter must be mounted on stand-offs, creating a gap between the letter and wall.

Choose Backlit if…
- You need exterior signage that reads clearly day and night
- Your wall doesn't allow stand-off mounting
- You want a bold, high-visibility commercial look
- Budget is a consideration — slightly more cost-effective
- Installation needs to be flush and clean
Choose Halo-Lit if…
- You want a premium floating effect for a lobby or interior
- Your wall is smooth and light-colored to show the halo
- The space is a hotel, luxury retail, or corporate HQ
- You want soft ambient lighting rather than direct glow
- Stand-off mounting is possible at your location
